Acceptance address by Dr Amol A. Gokhale

IIM Hyderabad Chapter AGM, Taj Tristar, 25th July, 2014.

Acceptance address by Dr Amol A. Gokhale, Chairman designate for 2014-2016

Shri N. Sai Baba, Chairman of the outgoing committee, senior members Dr M Nageswara Rao, Dr Muniratnam, EC members, members, invitees, well-wishers of metals and materials, ladies and gentlemen,

At the outset, let me compliment the outgoing committee for carrying out the activities of the chapter most professionally and keeping the fiscal health of the chapter in robust condition.  Creation of the website is one of the most important contributions they have made, and I am sure all will benefit from it.

Let me then extend warm greetings to one and all on the occasion of this Annual General Meeting.  It’s too early for an address, but considering that we are all members of the same IIM family, and so I can afford to be informal, let me do some loud thinking about our proposed plans for the next two years or so.

One way to keep the chapter vibrant and ticking is to have periodic events which create awareness among members about the infrastructure and capabilities that exist within our own chapter, enhance our domain knowledge, keep us abreast of things happening beyond our frontiers, and sensitise us to developments that may happen in the future.  Towards this end, I propose to have the following events:

3rd quarter of 2014: Tamhankar Memorial Lecture, one day workshop on ICME, (Prof I Manna), membership drive

4th quarter of 2014: national seminar on specialty steels (Shri SS Mohanty), membership drive

1st quarter of 2015: factory visit (BHEL, Midhani, or any other)

2nd quarter of 2015: Brain storming session on raw material security (Dr RN Patra), and AGM

3rd quarter of 2015: Students interaction (including NITW, JNTU, IITH, UoH and MGIT), Tamhankar Memorial Lecture

4th quarter of 2015: industry forum, membership drive

1st quarter of 2016: national seminar on Aerospace Materials

2nd quarter of 2016: visit by national president with students interaction and AGM

Hyderabad and the surrounding region is endowed with 4 to 5 institutions engaged in materials teaching and R&D, R&D labs under DRDO, DST, Atomic energy, Dept. of Mines, and BHEL, and many small, medium and large industries.  We have more than 500 members.

I have seen over the years that members from this chapter have excelled at the national level, either as Presidents or as awardees.  However, the Chapter as a whole has not become a brand yet, as e. g. the Trichy or Kalpakkam chapters have.  It’s our collective will, enterprising nature, creativity of thought and finally actions which will take us to higher paradigms.  In short, together we can create marvels for this chapter.  After all, we learnt from Gautam Buddha: Sangham Sharanam Gachchami!  Our chapter is our Sangh.

I look forward for creative and action oriented support and participation from one and all.

Thank you!
