XXII Tamhankar Memorial Lecture ‐ 2015

            The XXII Tamhankar Memorial Lecture was organized at DMRL by Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Hyderabad Chapter and DMRL on 29th July, 2015. Shri S Ramakrishnan, Padma Shri, Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor, ISRO / DOS and Former Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), ISRO, delivered the lecture on “MOM – Indian Foray into Planetary Exploration & Global Perspective”.

            Dr Amol A Gokhale, DS & Director DMRL and Chairman, IIM Hyderabad Chapter, started off the proceedings by paying rich tributes to Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. Dr Gokhale shared a few of his experiences with Dr Kalam and said that that Dr Kalam was one of the true leaders who truly “won the hearts of people”. Dr Gokhale proceeded to present a brief introduction of Dr R V Tamhankar. Shri Bapi Saha, Sc-G, RCMA (Materials) and Secretary, IIM Hyderabad Chapter introduced the speaker and highlighted his professional achievements and contributions.

 

            Shri Ramakrishnan shared a few personal anecdotes about Dr Kalam and his interactions and said that he was a rare personality who loved challenges and invariably motivated people around him. Starting off the lecture he said that the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) marked the country’s first venture into interplanetary space. He said the mission was essentially meant to inject the Mars orbiter in the sphere of influence (SOI) of Mars. He then gave an overview of the systems involved for the journey into space stressing on the strategic importance of the Launch Vehicle System and its components. Shri Ramakrishnan recounted the challenges faced as the nearest launch windows was only months away and shared that the mission planning, launch vehicle and spacecraft production and readying the support systems was done swiftly. He also shared the progress and current status of the mission. He went to chronicle the growth of ISRO in developing world class launch vehicle systems including GSLV, PSLV, etc. In the last part of his talk he said how future space exploration is of strategic importance particularly in the area of space mineral resources. He also spoke of using the moon as a base for further exploration and ended his talk by saying the Indian has now assured access to space.

 

            The event ended with Dr Gokhale, Shri M Narayana Rao, CMD, MIDHANI and Shri Bapi Saha felicitating Shri Ramakrishnan. The programme saw a capacity audience from various organizations like DMRL, MIDHANI, ARCI, and NFC.
